Donald’s story
After a while Archie and father came home with a deer they had killed with their spears. Everyone joined in helping to cut up the meat. They kept food from rotting by putting salt on it or hanging it from the thatched roof so that the smoke from the fire would smoke it. The hide was scraped and rubbed to soften it so that it could be used for clothes or bed covers. It was long hard work but there was time to run down to the loch to splash around – as long as no one was fishing nearby.

As soon as it got dark they all went inside because they had no light and would hear strange noises so they past the time by telling stories. Sometimes they were about brave hunters or the strange places visited by traders looking for places to exchange what they had for what they could not make or find themselves.

No one stayed up late unless there was a special feast.
There was always so much to do the next day.
