The
Hen Harrier
In Strathnairn you can find bird called the Hen Harrier. In Latin
its name is circus cyaneus and it may be seen near Farr. The male
has a grey head and the body is various shades of black and grey all
over. It has a black tail with a white rump. The female, although
larger than the male, is not at all so colourful but just a rich brown
all over with a white rump. The Hen Harrier is commonly spotted in
open country, moor land, forestry or farmland. However they have also
been sighted over inland and coastal marshes. The Hen Harrier call
is rarely heard but it has a chattering, “Kee kee kee“.
It nests between mid May to July. The eggs are white in colour and
are medium size. There are commonly 3 to 4 eggs in a nest. I
have seen a Hen Harrier and it is nice to watch. I think that anybody
interested in birds should come to Farr to see the Hen Harrier.
The Osprey.
I am writing about a bird called the Osprey which may be seen at Loch
Ruthven, near Farr. The Latin name for Osprey is Pandion greek king.
Its colour is white under the wing and brown on top.It is 55-58cm
long and it's shape is like that of a large gull. It lives in Scotland
in Summer and in Winter , in Africa. The Osprey has about 2-3 eggs.
The eggs are pink with big and little brown bits. The egg is shaped
like a ball but is a bit more curved at one end. Its song is a short
whistle, “Ttchip tchip tchip”. The Ospreys only eat fish.
I think I am lucky to live in a place where I can see Ospreys. |
