As you travel
along the road from Dores towards Foyers you need to look
very carefully for the Well of the Phantom hand. It is just before
the lay-by beside the fish farm. It lies on the left hand side of
the road as you face towards Foyers.
It is on the roadside but is overgrown with bracken and ferns. There
is an old stone which marks the Well but the inscription is covered
by moss. Should you manage to find the Well, take care as you bend
to peer in! Legend has it that those who stoop to drink see an outstretched
or phantom hand above their heads.
Little is known about the first sighting of the hand but folklore
has it that the hand has been seen on several occasions. Could it
be an unlucky traveller murdered as he stopped to drink? Perhaps some
unfortunate person drowned at the spot?
The mystery remains a secret!
