Aldourie lies about six miles from Inverness
on General Wade’s military road now known as the B862,
on the south side of Loch Ness. It is one mile from Dores, a
village on the shores of Loch Ness. Aldourie is an area with
farmland, several houses, a private castle overlooking Loch
Ness and our 130 year old primary school! When you travel towards
Dores you will pass our school on the left hand side of the
road. Just before you reach Dores, on the right are situated
the Aldourie Standing Stones. They are not visible from the
road but stand near the Deer Pond.
As you continue along the road you reach Dores. Here you will
see the start of Loch Ness and can stroll along Dores Beach.
Further along the road, almost opposite the fish farm on the
left side of the road is the Well of the Phantom Hand. It is
here you may have stopped for a drink of water as you travelled
along the road many years ago. It is not easy to find but there
is a stone bearing an inscription above the well.
Further along the road is the old Change House. This is now
just a pile of stones where the house once stood. There is a
sign posted path from the lay-by to the house and an information
board about its history. You now travel on towards Foyers. |
