On the road from
Dores to Fort Augustus, is a rough strip of arable land called
‘An Ire Mhor’ (the big piece of arable land). For many
years there was a small change house which stood on this spot.
Travellers used to change their horses there or rest for the night.
Now all that is left is a pile of stones and one very large stone!
There are many tales about evil deeds taking place in this house.
One woman who ran the establishment was attacked by a man. Her young
granddaughter managed to escape into the woods and run for help.
However, on returning with men from the village the old woman was
found murdered! Another story about the Change House around the time
of Culloden mentions the murder of the paymaster who carried the gold
from Fort Augustus to Inverness to pay the soldiers their wages. The
mystery of his death still remains unsolved over 250 years later!
It was visited by Dr Samuel Johnson and James Boswell as part of their
Highland Jaunt in 1773.
The video shows what remains of Change House today and tells the
story of what we think happened to the paymaster on that stormy
night!
